Fred H. Nye, Early Pioneer, Prominent Mining Expert, Dies

Frederick Hamlin (Fred) Nye, 74, Colorado pioneer, who for many years had been prominent in the mining Industry of the state, died of a complication of diseases Sunday afternoon at 8 :30 o'clock in his home. 810 10th street. Mr. Nye had been in failing health since he suffered a slight stroke about eight years ago and for the last mouth had been bedfast. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Frances E. Nye, to whom he had been married 33 years: a son, Herbert R. Nye, Colorado School of Mines graduate, who is engaged in mining at Alama : and a daughter, Miss Dorothy Nye at home. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters. They are Dr. William Nye of Hiawatha, Kan., Herbert Nye of San Francisco, Mrs. Henry Etz of Van Nuys. Calif., and Mrs. Downes of Los Angeles. Fred Nye and Miss Frances Sickles of Denver were married at the home of the bride's aunt, the late Mrs. Reuben C. Wells, in Golden on June 20, 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Nye and family moved to Golden about 15 years ago and this city has since been their home. Born in Geneseo, Ill.. Fred Nye came to Colorado 64 years ago with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Nye, with a pioneer caravan from that section of Illinois, whose destination was a settlement in the town of Greeley. After a brief residence in Greeley. Elisha Nye and his family located at Colorado Springs and for the occupancy of his family. Mr. Nye built the first dwelling house in that town. Later they resided at Lake City. When Mr. Nye went to Arizona to engage in mining near Tombstone, he was one of those drafted by the government to protect the state against the raids of Geronimo, the Apache chief. Until his health began to fail, Fred Nye was prominently and actively engaged in development of the mining industry in Colorado and thruout the west, particularly in the Cripple Creek and Lake City districts. About 30 years ago he was state mine inspector for a term of eight years. He was a model citizen in all that the term implies. Mr. Nye was a member of the Royal league.

Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at the Golden Presbyterian church with the pastor, Rev. Garrett S. Tamminga officiating. Burial was in Golden cemetery. The pallbearers were J. C. Bailar, B.P. Quaintandce, A.D. Quaintance, A.G. Buckman, Marion Lamm and JJ. C. Rose. Arrangements were in charge of Woods mortuary.
