Rex was the son of Charles Campbell and Sally (Humphries) Campbell Minter. Rex was the first husband of Virgil Neta (Merrill) Campbell Fernau Barton (1897-1953). Rex and Virgil were married on August 5, 1915 in Grady County, Oklahoma. They had three children together: Howard, Jack and Mary Jo Campbell.
In February, 1929, Rex was sentenced to 25 years in prison for armed robbery in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. His brother, Lawrence A. Campbell, helped post bond for Rex. In 1930, Rex failed to show up for his hearing and the courts decided to take Lawrence Campbell's 200 acre farm in exchange for Rex's $7500 bond.
