Local marine Dies In Viet Nam Action
Pfc. Vernal Martin
The war in Viet Nam had its impact in Marshfield today with word that a Marshfield Marine lost his life in the Quang Tri area on Monday, Aug. 8.
He was Pfc. Vernal Martin, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Martin, 505 S. Ash Ave.
The Marine was the first local man to die in the Vietnamese war.
The family was informed by telegram this morning of his death. He was wounded Monday and died in a hospital later W same day, it was reported. Pfc. Martin began his second
tour of duty in Viet Nam July 1 his parents said.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps July 18, 1963, and received his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He served •with the 19th Fleet Marine
Force in the Da Nang area from
July 38 to Nov. 1, 1964.
The Marine was then sent to
Okinawa and returned to the
continental United States in March, 1965.
While in Viet Nam on his 'original tour of duty Martin received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and a Viet-
1 namese citation. At Da Nahg,

Rites Set for Pfc. V.Martin
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Pfc. Vernal Martin, 21, son of Mr.and Mrs. Wilford Martin, 505 S. Ash Ave. who lost his life Aug. 8 in Viet Nam. The Rev. L. H. Timmerman will officiate, and burial will be made in the Gate of Heaven cemetery.
The body will arrive at the Rembs Funeral Home this evening and friends may call there beginning Wednesday noon. The Christian Mothers Society rosary services will be conducted there at 3 p. m. Wednesday, and a general rosary will be held at 8 p. m. Wednesday.
Vernal Martin was born March 9, 1945, in Marshfield, and received his education at Sacred Heart Catholic School, and Marshfield Senior High.
In addition to his parents, survivors are a brother, James Martin, Marshfield; two sisters, Mrs. Adolph (Marian) Kraus, Marsh-field, and Mrs. Wallace (Patricia) Garbisch, Granton; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Velte, and great - grandmother, Mrs. Stella McCoy, all of Marshfield.
