Attended schools in Alamosa, CO, and Catholic Abbey School in Canyon City, CO. He married Dora Mae DeGolyer on Sept. 2, 1950, in Santa Fe, NM. They moved to Lawton in 1950.

Ray was an officer with the LPD 1950-1954. He joined the Lawton Fire Department in January 1955. While he was with the fire dept, he obtained the ranks of driver, lieutenant, and fire marshall.

He retired from the Lawton Fire Dept as Fire Marshall in 1976; retired from the Goodyear Rubber & Tire Plant in 1989 as Coordinator of Safety and Security. In 1976, he served as President of the OK State Firefighters Association, and he served on the executive board of OK Retired Firefighters 1982-7.

After his retirement from the LFD, he worked as a salesman for Bill Story Fire & Safety. Throughout his LFD career, he worked in a variety of part-time jobs: Currell Lumber, SW Salvage, Kirk's Wrecker, Mid-west Furniture, Green Lawn Ambulance. In the 1980s, he owned and operated Grumpy Granny's Arcade and the East Gore Car Wash.

He was involved in many organizations with youths, including coaching football and baseball at Robrt E Lee Elementary. He chartered the Boy Scouts of America for the Latter-day Saints troop. Volunteer for the SW Hospital gift shop. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions in the church.

Parents: Earl Jennings and Ethel Frazier Catlin. Wife: Dora Mae DeGolyer Catlin (Santa Fe, NM, Sept 2, 1950), 3 children (Cathy McVey, Richard Catlin, and Mike Catlin), 7 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and a grandson, Kevin.

He was talker, storyteller, a great spirit, and is missed by his family.

Services were held on Saturday, May 7, 2005, 2pm, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lawton, with Bishop W Mathew Kappel officiating. Service by the Becker Funeral Home. Casket Bearers: Lawton Fire Department Honor Guard, LT Thad Hulbert, LT Mark Schucker, and Drivers Scott Preston, Kent Taylor, Brett Ford, and Damon Bybee. Honorary Casket Bearers: Ray Brown Jr., Ray Brown Sr., Jerry Abraham, CJ Hall, Larry Boggs, and Michael Morey.
