Dr. Lee Pierce Butler (b. Dec. 19, 1884 - d. Mar. 29, 1953), was an expert in rare books, an ordained Episcopal Minister, and a professor of Library Science at the Graduate School at the University of Chicago. He married Ruth Lapham in 1926. They had no children. He died in a tragic automobile accident in North Carolina while he was a visiting professor in the Department of Library Science at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was cremated and interred in the Maple Grove Cemetery near Paw Paw, Mich. He is considered by many to be one of the first great professors in the field of modern library science and a great mind in the philosophy of librarianship and library service.
