Pioneer Attorney called by Death. Funeral of J.F. Martin wll be held from Lutheran Church Friday.
The funeral services for J.F.Martin, 71, pioneer and long prominent attorney of central Iowa, who passed away at his home on Tenth Street, Nevada, Tuesday at 7:30 o’clock will be held from Memorial Lutheran Church Friday afternoon at 3:00, after which interment will be in the Nevada Cemetery under the ritualistic services of the Masonic order, by Columbia Lodge No. 292 of Colo in conjunction with Nevada Lodge.
Mr. Martin had been ill for almost a year and a half, suffering from a cancerous condition. He had been confined to his home for the past six or eight months and to his bed practically all the time for the past three months.
A practicing attorney at the bar of Story County for over 46 years, his activities had taken him into many other courts of the state when he was at one time one of the most promiinent figures, and was recognized as one of the most capable practitioners in the state and for many yhears enjoyed a most lucerative practice. His law library is recognized as one of the finest in Iowa.
J.Francis Martin was born in Bureau County, Ill., December 25, 1852, son of Charles and Victoria Martin. He received his education in the public schools of Bureau County after which he entered school at Wheaton, Ill.in which institution he remained three years. After having made up his mind to make law his chosen profession he entered a law office in the city of Chicago in 1874, remaining two years, at the end of which time he entered the law department of the State University at Iowa City and graduated in 1877.
In company with H.M.Funston now of Ottawa, Kan., who was from his home county and who had graduated with him in law school and who had been his roommate, he came to Nevada and opened a law office under the name of Funston and Martin. The partnership continued for the course of a year or so when same was dissolved Mr. Funston to take over the Nevada practice and Martin going to Colo and opening an office where he later formed a partnership with T.L. Sellers, now judge on the bench at Des Moines. In 1881 he opened an office in Nevada, Judge Sellers continuing the Colo office. Later, for a short time he had associated with him in his practice A.L.Bartlett, now Judge of the Circuit court at Leola, S.D. During another brief period, John Y. Luke, now practicing in Ames, was associated with Mr. Martin.
On May 31, 1879 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Z. Daley of Colo. She died Marcch 10, 1882 leaving, besides her husband, a son, Charles C., to mourn her loss. Miss Alice M. Slifer of Grundy Center, became his wife on June 26, 1883. On December 29, 1901 occurred her demise. She left one son, Lester F. to mourn her loss. On November 13, 1920, he was united in marriage with Elma L. Doolittle. Two children were born to this union. Delbert L. and Ruth.
In his death Mr. Martin leaves his wife Elma, L. Martin, three sons, Charles C. Of Hawardan, Lester F. And Delbert L. Of Nevada, one daughter, Ruth of Nevada and one brother, A.L.Martin of Manilus, Ill. All were at his bedside when the final summons came.
Mr. Martin was made a Master Mason on 1880 in the Columbia Lodge No. 292, Colo in which lodge he has had a continuous membership and for a good many years was Master of this lodge and at the time of his death was the oldest member of the lodge. For a good many years he was one of the active workers of the Grand Lodge of Iowa having held the offices of Senior Grand Warden and Deputy Grand Master.
