Al was born Oct. 13, 1920, in West Glens Falls, New York, to Alfred and Viola (Durkee) Gilbert. He graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1939.

On Aug. 1, 1943, he married the love of his life, Beatrice V. Gilbert, in Hudson Falls, NY. Bea preceded him in 2009. They lived in New York, Florida, Michigan and in Gresham for the past 49 years.

Survivors include sons, Alfred "Butch" H. Gilbert Jr. and his wife Cheryl, of Three Rivers, MI, David G. Gilbert and his wife Patsy, of Longwood FL.; Twin daughters, Penny Moore and her husband Keith, of Gresham, OR, Pam Gilbert and her husband Rory, of Sandy, OR, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. His son, Bruce W. Gilbert preceded him in 2006 and his surviving wife Louie, of Canton, GA.

Al enlisted in the US Army October of 1943. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany for 11 mos. during this period. Al landed on the beaches of Normandy, France approximately 3 days after the initial invasion in June of 1944. He was assigned to Company F of the 357th Infantry Regiment of the 90th Division of the Texas/Oklahoma (T&O). He was released from active duty and Honorably Discharged from the US Army on November 29, 1945 at Fort George G Meade, Maryland.

Al spent a total of 48 years in the paper mill industry. He was offered a transfer to Oregon in 1970 as a salesman for Porritts & Spencer for the Western Region until his retirement at 65 after having 25 yrs with the company.

Al loved to travel but always said Hawaii was his favorite place. He loved to golf, take trips to Reno to play blackjack, the comforts of home, walking the garden, reading, bird watching, especially the hummingbirds and watching an occasional old movie as well as having friends and family stop over to visit him from time to time.

Al was an "admirable" man, always honest with others and with himself, received gratefully and gave quietly, gentle enough to feel and strong enough to show his feelings, slow to see the faults of others but quick to discover their goodness, cheerful in difficult times and modest in success, did his best to be true to his beliefs, to each their own and never judged….this is what made him an Admirable Man.

Al was the best father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend and will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 22, 2019 at his residence, 4802 SE 27th Court, Gresham, 3PM.

A private family service will be held on a later date.
