Martin was born in New Barbadoes (Hackensack) and was the son of John Spelman (Spellman) and Bridget Ford. He married Mary Ann Murphy (daughter of John and Mary Murphy). Martin and Mary Ann had two children: Martin F. Jr., and John Frances. Martin lived all his life in New Barbardoes (Hackensack) and was a Holster by trade. He departed this life at the young of 30, leaving a wife and two small children. His wife died less than a year later.
