Cynthia Noyes Broome, 74, of Ocean Springs passed away peacefully with family by her side on Friday, September 1, 2023.
Cindy was born Cynthia Elaine Noyes on May 27, 1949, the last of three children, to Theodore E. Noyes and Eula Mae (Quave) Noyes in Biloxi, Mississippi. Cindy graduated from St. Martin High School in 1966, and went on to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, where she met the love of her life, Douglas Scott "Scotty" Broome. They were engaged after only two short weeks, and were married on April 14, 1968. Cindy received her undergraduate and graduate degrees, in English, from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Cindy spent her career as English Instructor, and while she taught at USM's English Language Institute and Ocean Springs High School, she spent the vast majority of her teaching career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Jackson County Campus. Here is where she found her greatest impact on people as an instructor. Cindy had people tell her they went into teaching English because of the way she "made the English language come alive", and had students tell her that they would not have graduated from college save the extra time she spent with them studying English. Cindy served as the Department Chair for English at MGCCC, but her passion was in the classroom where she had a particular love for British Literature. She was also a perfectionist when it came to grading papers. Such was her devotion to her students she would read each paper three times before issuing a grade, and she regularly went to bed around midnight and would get up at 3:00 AM.
Cindy was raised in the Methodist Church, but became a member of First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs after marrying Scotty. Cindy's Christian faith was the bedrock of her life and values, and her faith in God and her kind and calming presence were the glue that held her family together in many a family tempest.
In 2016 Cindy was diagnosed with Dementia/Alzheimer's, and as her condition progressed, Cindy loved to give hugs to people. While she may have been giving these hugs to receive comfort from her condition, anyone who received one of these hugs felt a warmth and love that would make you smile on even the worst of days. They were the best hugs.
Cindy was preceded in death by her son, Patrick Sean Broome; her beloved husband Scotty; her parents Theodore E. Noyes and Eula Mae (Quave) Noyes; her brother Terryl Noyes; and her sister Theda Hodge Barney, with whom she had such a special relationship. Cindy is survived by her daughter, Courtney Leigh Broome; her son, Eric Scott Broome; her nephew, Matthew Hodge, Jr.; and numerous cousins whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Lighthouse in Ocean Springs, and give special thanks to the staff of Notre Dame Hospice that treated her like a member of their family.
A private graveside service will be held at Crestlawn Memorial Park with Dr. Mike Barnett of First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
