Florence J. Andersen, age 97, born November 17, 1925, to Hiram and Hazel (Siemens) Hansen, passed away on September 4, 2023, at Whispering Pines Assisted Living Facility in Plover, WI.

Florence was born and raised in her family home on Dixon Street in Stevens Point, the oldest of three children. After graduating from high school in 1944, she married her husband, Charles Andersen, and eventually they settled in Wautoma, WI to raise their two sons, Curtis and Craig.

In 1965, her husband was killed in a tragic accident while on a job site working for Wisconsin Power & Light. A little over two-and-a-half years later, Florence's oldest son, Curtis, died from injuries sustained in a car accident. Despite these devastating events, Florence continued to move forward in her life. While raising her remaining son on her own, she became a great contributor of community service in Wautoma. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Eastern Star, a chairperson for the Badger Girls State, and a member/volunteer for the Wautoma Senior Citizen Center, to name a few. In addition, at the time of her death, she had been a continuous member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 74 years.

Florence had worked in the Wautoma School District prior to her retirement as a teacher's assistant. She also could be seen frequently at Johnny and Jean Sitterle's gas station/gift shop, assisting customers and sharing with out-of-towners some of the great places to stop, shop, or eat in Wautoma.

Florence enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, the Packers, and spending time with family, her friends, and her fellow members of the various committees and organizations she was a part of. And of course, her nieces and nephews enjoyed spending time with her as well, especially when it was summer, because a summer wouldn't be complete without a trip to Auntie's cottage on Silver Lake.

Florence would tell stories of when she was younger, growing up in Stevens Point. One such story was when her father, Hiram Hansen, and her grandfather built Hi's BBQ (now known as Bahama's) on Hwy HH, Stevens Point. Florence and her brother, Dwayne, would bring buckets of water from the Wisconsin River so that cement could be poured for the basement of the bar. She also reminisced on having her first beer at the now Club 10, Stevens Point, where her and her friends would go dancing. And no matter where the fish fry was, Point beer would always be her drink of choice.

Florence will be greatly missed by her surviving family: grandchildren, Cassandra (Seth) Beyers and Justin Andersen; nephew, Mark (Niki) Hansen; nieces, Catherine Hansen, Cassandra Hansen, and Kim (Shawn) Fisher; many great, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Andersen; her sons, Curtis and Craig Andersen; her brother, Dwayne Hansen, and her sister, Carole Hansen; nephews, Allen (Sharon), Keith, and Charles (Bonnie) Hansen; nieces, Sherry and Deborah Hansen; and great niece, Rebecka Braenne.

Thanks to Ritchay Funeral Home for their kindness and expertise. Much gratitude also to ProMedica Hospice and the staff at Whispering Pines for their love, care, and compassion for "Flossie."

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Waushara County Senior Center on September 23, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A private family burial was held at Hope Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Catherine Hansen, c/o Ritchay Funeral Home, Wisconsin Rapids.
