In March 2008 Babec started clutching his chest and acted lethargic. He was too ill for a 4th heart surgery. He was euthanized.
According to the Birmingham News, the Zoo Curator, Rodger Iles and CEO Bill Foster stated:
"He will be missed. He was known nationally. That is something to be proud of and something the Zoo but the Birmingham community has accomplished. Babec has contributed to the understanding of gorillas who have a history of suffering heart disease in captivity. His scientific data gathered since 2004 will be fed into a database for all scientist to better determine why zoo gorillas, especially males in their 20's and 30's die because of this illness."
A necropsy was preformed [as are all Zoo animals enthanized].
