Dies at 86 from
Heart Attack

Murray State college lost one of its most beloved professors August 20, when Coach Carlisle Cutchin suffered a fatal heart attack. Coach Cutchin, who was 68, died at his home in Murray.

Last March while attending the state high school basketball tournament in Lexington Coach Cutchin suffered a near fatal attack. He was hospitalized in Lexington for several weeks. He returned to Murray during the final weeks of school and appeared to be recovering when the fatal attack came.

At the time of his death Coach Cutchin was a professor of health education and baseball coach.. Mr. Cutchin was very close to the athletic scene at Murray. He came to Murray in 1925 as head football and basketball coach. He remained as football coach until 1930 and kept the reins of the basketball team until 1941. In 1948, Mr. Cutchin took over as basketball coach in mid-season after John Miller resigned.

Years ago the college honored Mr. Cutchin by renaming the football field after him.

In football and basketball, Cutchin's teams made records that are still standing at Murray. In 1928, the football team lost but one game. The 1951 football team was able to equal the mark. In basketball, Cutchin led Murray to the NAIB twice. The 1951-52 basketball team equaled the record made by the Cutchin men and came within a hair of beating it, but the mark still stands.

In basketball, one of the most contrasting sights was at Murray-Western games. One one end of the bench, Western's Ed Diddle would be hopping and jumping about, and on the other end of the bench sat Mr. Cutchin, legs crossed peacefully watching the game.

Mr. Cutchin came to Murray from Mayfield High School where he had coached several very successful teams. His 1920 football team is often regarded as the best high school team in state history.
