Norwich Police Sergeant Dies After Week's Illness
Allen Cameron Mathews of No. 17 Hobart avenue, Norwich, first sergeant of the Norwich police force, died yesterday morning at 5.30 o'clock, following a serious illness of about a week's duration. His death, which came as a shock to his many friends, was due to pneumonia. Police Sergeant Mathews was well known in this city, particularly among local policemen and court officials, having testified in many criminal and civil cases in the superior and common pleas courts here. Allen Cameron Mathews was born on North Main street, Norwich, May 14, 1857 and for years resided in the Greenville section. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mathews. On December 28, 1885, he was united in marriage with Myra J. Perryman, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Mr. Jewett. All of his married life had been spent in Norwich. In his younger days he was employed for a time by the old Norwich & Worcester railroad. In January, 1883, he was appointed a supernumerary member of the Norwich police force and continued to serve the department in that capacity until July 1, 1884, when he was appointed a regular. For many years he had the day beat in Greenville. June 13, 1912, he was appointed first sergeant and had served in that capacity since that time.
