Son of wealthy Glasgow merchant, James Kay Brown (1816-1878). Brother of W. D. Brown (1852-1876), Scotland rugby captain.
Emigrated to Australia in 1879. Sheep station manager for the Clarks at Ghoolendaadi. Owned Fairfield near Boggabri 1897-1935. Married Margaret Kerr Clark (1872-1950), daughter of John Kerr Clark and Kate Robertson, daughter of Sir John Robertson.
