Richard Eugene "Gene" Watts, 87, Seymour, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Lutheran Community Home.
Born in Moberly, Mo., on Aug. 1, 1926, he was the son of Charles M. and Minnie Watts.
He grew up in Moberly, Mo., and after high school served in the U.S. Army Air Force for one year and spent nine months in Japan.
On Oct. 17, 1948, he married Alice L. Damgaard in Moberly, Mo.
Mr. Watts moved to Seymour in 1963. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Seymour, for 50 years, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the board of deacons, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a member of Jackson Lodge 146, where he was a master Mason.
During his work career, he lived in Perth, Ontario, Canada, for five years, where he worked for Brown Shoe Co. In 1963, he moved to Seymour and was employed with Gerwin Shoe Co. and retired from U.S. Shoe Corp. in 1991.
He loved the movies, and in his retirement years he worked at Great Escape Theater in Seymour. He and his wife, Alice, also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 16 years. He loved working in his yard, fishing and hunting, and attending his grandchildren's church and school activities, especially traveling to attend many marching band competitions.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; children, Chris (Becky) Watts and Ann (Greg) Parman; grandchildren, Allison Parman, Tracy (Steven) Tolliver and Mark Watts; and brothers and sisters, Robert (Jeanne) Watts, William (Norma) Watts, Betty (Charles) Skinner and Sharon (James) Matheny.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Seymour, with the Rev. Bruce Cochran and the Rev. Larry Tingle officiating.
Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, with full military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.
