Son of James Ellis Shirts and Lydia Musetta Workman


Married Ilda Mae Lance, 20 July 1919, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Sealed in Salt Lake City Temple on 12 Sep 1950.


History. Bert started his life on his father's fruit farm, born on March 12, 1902, at Provo Bench, Utah, they stayed for one year then they moved to Victor, Idaho where his father James bought a farm & store.


In 1904 they moved to Canada, and then they moved back to Provo, Utah in 1908. They took his first automobile ride in Provo and talked to President Joseph F. Smith, the sixth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hehe came to their home in Provo. The Shirts family bought a ranch down the Duchesne River about 8-10 miles below Duchesne, Ut. He loved going to dances & was a very good dancer.


Bert loved to go fishing and work in the rock garden. He made a beautiful wishing well. He loved to paint, as he was a wonderful artist. He loved life, his family, and his wife Ilda, they met at a Halloween dance in Antelope, Utah, and Bert always teased Ilda, that when Bert met Ilda, Ilda had a mask on. Bert loved to decorate at Christmas time, especially outdoors. He made many beautiful decorations on his home and won many first prizes in Hailey, Idaho.


On March, 8th three days before his 39th birthday, Bert was seriously injured with a broken back in the Triumph mine at Triumph, Id about 7 miles from Hailey. He was in the hospital for a year and Ilda stayed by his side almost all the time, it was a terrible blow for him and his family. He was always so cheerful and NEVER complained, his faith & attitude helped him in the years ahead. They bought a house in the old Hailey.


After he was home from the hospital and was in the wheelchair they started to remodel their home, the remodeling went on for many years Bert had to use both hands to use a hammer, it was very hard for him to even with his crippled condition his work went along very well. He later walked with a cane all his life.


He passed away June 11, 1972, in Sun Valley Hospital in Sun Valley, Idaho, and was buried in the Hailey Cemetery in Hailey, Idaho.
