Ernest S. Macaulay, 84, West Main Street, died Tuesday morning at his home, where he had been under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Mr. Macaulay was employed by New York Central Railroad, Penn Central Railroad and Conrail, retiring in 1983 as an engineer after 42 years' service.

Born Jan. 22, 1922, in Fowler, son of George and Lena Belle Yerdon Macaulay, he graduated from Gouverneur High School and entered the Navy in June 1944. He served until May 1946, when he was discharged as a seaman first class.

He married Marilyn P. Kousch in September 1948 at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Gouverneur. The couple lived in Gouverneur and for a year in Watertown before moving to Brownville.

Mr. Macaulay was a member of Allen-Giles American Legion Post 588 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Gouverneur.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters and a son-in-law, a son and his wife, a sister, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A daughter, Heather Lena Belle Macaulay, died in 1972. A brother, Robert, and a sister, Hazel E. Fenton, also died before him.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter, with the Rev. Helen J. Hadley, pastor of Brownville United Methodist Church, officiating. The body will be cremated. Burial will be in Gouverneur.
