U.S. Senator, Politician. Following his graduation from Lamont High School in 1947, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe during the Korean War. While still in the Army, he pursued further education at the University of Maryland, Wiesbaden, and the University of Frankfurt. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1953 and his Master's in 1956 at Upper Iowa University and the University of Iowa, respectively. He then returned to Upper Iowa University to become a professor. In 1972, he ran for the Iowa US Senate position, which he won and held from January 3, 1973, until January 3, 1979. During his tenure as a senator, he served on the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, the Committee on Environment and Public Works, and the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. After his unsuccessful bid for re-election in 1978, he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as Ambassador at Large and United States Coordinator for Refugee Affairs. He passed away at his home in his sleep at the age of 95.
