A well-known member of the printing craft, Thomas J. Carter died yesterday at his home, 5727 Cote St. Antoine road, following a prolonged illness. He was in his 75th year.

Mr. Carter took an active part in local Irish affairs, being county president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a member of St. Patrick's Society, the Emmett Club and the United Irish Societies. A member of St. Patrick's parish for more than 30 years, he was one of the founders of the Unity Club.

Born and educated in Quebec City, he moved to Montreal about 40 years ago to join the staff of the True Witness, and was later with The Gazette and The Montreal Daily Star. He was with the Desbarets Printing Company until his retirement 10 years ago. He belonged to the Montreal Typographical Union, Local 178.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last October.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Agnes Kerr; four sons, Rev. Alex Carter, vice-chancellor of the Archdiocese of Montreal and chaplain of St. Mary's Hospital; Rev. G. Emmett Carter, director of the Jacques Cartier Normal School and chaplain of the Newman Club; Cyril J. of Montreal and Thomas J. of Atlantic City; three daughters Rev. Sister M. Lenore of the Sisters of Providence, Belleville, Ont.; Mother M. Carter, of the Sacred Heart Convent, Halifax, N.S., and Mrs. Wilfrid J. Duggan of Montreal; four grandchildren, Mrs. W. Haggard of Miami, Fla.; Thomas J. Carter, and Lenore and Gerald Duggan, as well as one sister, Mrs. S. Trainer.

The funeral will take place at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church at 9 a.m., Wednesday.
