Alda Jean (Smith) Monsen
September 28, 1945 ~ June 10, 2018 72 Years Old

Alda Jean Monsen passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2018 after a five year battle with cancer.

Alda was always full of laughter and a great listener to anyone who needed an ear. With the many ups and downs she faced, Alda always held her head up high and prevailed with grace and elegance. Even through her courageous battle with cancer, she always had a smile on her face. Alda loved to read, do crafts, and most of all spend time with her family. She had the unique ability to find humor in any situation and lived her life to the fullest. She graduated from Wilmington High School in 1963 and began her career as a telephone operator. Alda then worked for 30 years for the State of Delaware, first as the assistant to the Law Librarian, then becoming the Law Librarian, and retired in May 2017. She made many great friends there whom she really cherished.

Alda was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Ferdinand M. Monsen; her parents, George and Martha Smith; her two dogs, Buddy and Sparky.

Alda is survived by her children, Fred and Judy Monsen and their sons, Sam and Matthew; Susan and Bobby Braverman and their daughter, Madeline; George and Lisa Monsen and their children, Danny and Emma; Mary Beth Monsen and her children, Gillian, Amanda and Alexander. She is also survived by her sister, Leanne Stell and husband, Richard; her nieces and nephews.

Mom, even though you are physically gone, your laughter will forever remain in our hearts.

Friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Thursday, June 14 from 5:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington on Friday, June 15 at 1:00PM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 (www.nemours.org).
