In 1967 they relocated to Taos, NM, where Gene spent 10 years at the Questa Mine, Molycorp, Inc's open pit molybdenum mining operation. Gene became General Superintendent of operations in 1969, Resident Manager in 1972 and General Manager in 1974. Molycorp was the largest employer in northern NM, occasionally peaking at over 1,000 employees.
In 1975 Gene was promoted to VP of Mining and Exploration for Molycorp and relocated to the New York office. In 1977 Molycorp merged into Unocal Corporation. In 1979 Gene was transferred to Unocal's corporate offices in Los Angeles. Gene was promoted to President of Molycorp in 1985 and to VP of Carbon and Minerals in 1991.
He retired in June of 2000, bought a 47-foot cutter rigged sloop and sailed it from Ft. Lauderdale to Trinidad in 2001 and back in 2002. Since that time, he and Lynne have been sailing around the world a few weeks every year on rental sailing vessels with their friends. He was a neighborhood volunteer in civic matters and events. His hobbies included swimming, biking, hiking, paddle tennis, sailing, hunting and skiing. Gene is survived by his wife Lynne, son Mark and daughter-in-law Patricia.
