Lavina Armstrong, a former resident of Clarion County, met with a fatal accident on Monday of this week, at West Monterey, being struck by a locomotive of the Allegheny Valley Railroad. Deceased was 72 years old, a widow and leaves three sons and daughters, also six brothers and three sisters to mourn her demise. Mrs. Armstrong was a devoted Christian and although death came very suddenly, no doubt found her fully prepared to meet Him in whom she had trusted.

Clarion Democrat, Thursday, October 31, 1889

Instantly killed -- The East Brady Review of last week says: A distressing accident happened on the railroad at West Monterey on Monday morning by which Mrs. Lavina Armstrong, aged 72 years, was instantly killed. The old lady had been in Shephard's shoe store having some repairs made and she walked out of the shop on to the railroad track just as the south bound express due at 10 was coming into the town. She did not see the train which was then only a few yards away and could not be stopped in time to avoid the accident. She was struck by the engine and was thrown from the track. Deceased was a widow and resident in Topeka, Kansas. She came to Monterey four weeks ago and was visiting with her sister and brother, Mr. Lot Gardner. She was a sister of county commissioner Gardner.

Highlights: The sister she was visiting was Hannah (Gardner) Yingling married to George Washington Yingling. They had a store at West Monterey. Commissioner Gardner was Jesse Freeman Gardner.
