She married J. Ludlow Skinner in Raleigh on 21 December 1892. He was shot to death on the street there on 21 February 1903 by Ernest Haywood, an acquaintance and lawyer. As both men were regarded as socially prominent, the story (and the trial) received national coverage.
Haywood was married to Octavia's sister Gertrude.

She married widower Joseph Boylan, a physician, in August 1907. Their daughter Josephine Jacobsen (1909-2003) was a renowned writer & poet.
