Remembering Daddy

(By Ellen Louise)

In the summer, Daddy took us on car rides

into the country, looking for jackrabbits,

roadrunners & deer.

And at Christmas time, we'd ride about town

to look at the lights & enjoy the seasonal

cheer

*

When we moved to the house on Rio Street,

Daddy decided to fence off the back yard.

He gave us kids all the pieces of blocks, instead

of taking them to the trash & discard.

Another time Daddy bought a swing set &

to keep it from tipping off it's four feet

He buried them all in 6 inches of concrete

Years later, after we moved again

to the house on Kansas Street,

It was still there, justa rusting away

in it's concrete feet

*

Santa Claus brought me a Susie Homemaker

oven, & the cookies & cakes I made were for

Daddy to enjoy.

When I made him a mini meat loaf, & he said,

"It was the best he'd ever had", I was

completely overjoyed.

*

On Sunday nights, Daddy would spread newspaper

across the floor,

So us kids could shine his shoes & each receive

a 25¢ reward.

*

Daddy drove me thru the neighborhoods,

when I was selling Girl Scout cookies

And no matter what, I would always sell out

everywhere he took me

*

At a Father - Daughter box lunch banquet & play

everybody had to make their own box

& while ours wasn't the prettiest, it was a bit

unorthodox

From an oatmeal box & four pencils we made

a HORSE & to get inside, you had to take

his head off.

While some were totally freaked out, most

everyone else just let out a loud guffaw.

*

Daddy loved to travel & almost every summer

we went just about everywhere!

From the Gulf of Mexico to Canada, from

California to Florida. we'd enjoy the best

vacations ever
