My great-aunt.

Shirley Elizabeth Hewey, 90, passed away surrounded by her loving family on September 28, 2023.
Shirley was born October 2, 1932 in Middle Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, born to Ruth and Charles Bates. She grew up and was raised with her nine siblings on their family farm.
She was married at a young age in 1948 to her husband Richard also known as Red.
Being a military wife meant moving from place to place quite often but they finally settled in a sunny St James neighborhood in Winnipeg Manitoba.
Shirley spent many of her working years at Safeway and then retired to spend time with her grandchildren and to live her best life.
She loved to sew, enjoyed quilting and cross stitching.
She had a real green thumb when it came to gardening. She always had the biggest tomatoes and the fullest flowers. She will be remembered as our Nanny, Nan, Big Nana, her strength, strong-will, independence, sassy wit, fashionable taste in sunglasses and her Oh So Good cherry pie.
She leaves behind her three beautifully attentive children, Jim (Rhonda), Cindy (Jim), Teresa (Wilf) and all of her FAVORITE grandchildren Debbie (Chris), Jenny (Dave), Shauna (Ryan), Leah (Peter), Jessica (Darren) and Tyler (Alix). Her greatest grandchildren Taylor, Kristyn, Kaynen, Zak, Dreydan, Brody, Keira, Lexton and Chance. Also leaving behind, her brothers John, Bruce and Gerald, sister Madeline, numerous nieces and nephews, great neighbors and lifelong friends.
Shirley is predeceased by her parents Ruth and Charles, husband Richard, siblings Harry, Richard, Charles Jr, Walter and sister Marie and daughter-in-law Brenda Hewey.

Her family would like to thank the nurses and staff at River East Care home that treated her like part of their family from the beginning to the end. Thank you for sharing your memories of her from the day to day. The love and grace you showed her will never be forgotten.

A celebration of life for Shirley will be held at Chapel lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue at 10 AM Wednesday, October 4th.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you do an act of kindness or donation to a senior care centre or an animal shelter in Shirley's name
