It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dale Benjamin Mellott, a beloved father, husband, and friend, who departed this world on September 26, 2023. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, a wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and cherished memories that will forever remain etched in our hearts.
Born on June 21, 1938, in Webster Mills, Fulton County, PA, was a son to Rankin and Catherine (Keefer) Mellott and a loving husband to Esther from Needmore, PA. Together, they built a life filled with love for over 62 years, laughter, and a deep commitment to their family. He was a father to three children, including the eldest daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Thomas Straight of Casper, WY, Jeannette (daughter) and Judson Fodness of Mechanicsburg, PA, and son, Christopher and Beth Mellott of Camp Hill, PA, who were the pride and joy of his life.
A man of unwavering principles, faith, and an indomitable spirit, Dale was known for his resilience and determination. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and excelled. His dedication and sacrifice serve as an enduring example of how hard work, love, and determination can prove to excel despite what others limited him to. After serving in the Army and in the Pennsylvania National Guard, he became a Civil Engineer after countless hours of hard work and dedication. He worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Highway and Bridge Technology in Harrisburg, PA and was a member of the American Society of Highway Engineers. He retired in 1991 after 35 years working for the state and being recognized for his work. After retirement, he did consulting work for another 15 years.
Dale had a passion for genealogy, music, Atari computers, miniature railroading, and traveling, which he enthusiastically shared with his family. Whether it was teaching his children how family vacations could be seamlessly connected with a business trip, spending quality time with his eight grandchildren or two great-grandchildren, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home with his wife, he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
In addition to his role as a dedicated father, Dale was also a cherished friend to many. His warm smile, sense of humor, wit, and willingness to lend a helping hand endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to his friends and family alike.
Dale is survived by his loving wife, Esther of 62 years; his children Jennifer, Jeannette, and Christopher; his grandchildren Brandon, Tiffany, Benjamin, Abagail, Zachary, Adam, Elizabeth, and Sara; his great-grandchildren Payton and Hunter along with a brother Alan Mellott and his wife Sally, a sister Sharon Glazier and her husband Kenneth Lee and a host of relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by siblings; Preston Mellott, Nellie Parson, Martha Painter, infant sister Laura Mellott, Cleo Donahue, Alvey Mellott and Grover Mellott.
A memorial service to celebrate Dale's life will be held on October 6th at St. John's Lutheran Church at 11 AM, Shiremanstown. The family will receive friends and family at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in honor of Dale's memory to either St. John's Lutheran Church (https://www.stjohns1787.org) or Parkinson's Research (https://www.michaeljfox.org/ )
Interment will be held after the service in Shiremanstown on Friday, October 6th at Ebenezer Christian Church Cemetery in Needmore, PA at 3:00 PM.
