MRS. EMMA HESSEN IS VICTIM SHORT ILLNESS
Mother of City Treasurer Passed Away at Hospital

Mrs. Emma Anderson Hessen, mother of City Treasurer John Hessen, passed away at the Methodist Hospital yesterday at 11 o'clock following a short illness. She had recently celebrated her eighty-second birthday anniversary and for the greater part of her life she had been a resident of Memphis, greatly beloved by a wide circle of friends.

Mrs. Hessen was born in St. Louis, July 19, 1845, and her father, Mr. Anderson, was an Englishman who engaged in the manufacture of tobacco at St. Louis. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he gave his support to the Confederacy, and during the first year of that conflict, federal troops burned his factory and he at once removed his family to Memphis. Though a mere girl, Mrs. Hessen, then Emma Anderson, became a nurse in the Confederate service and she devoted her time to nursing soldiers who were confined in the old Overton Hotel, then used as a hospital by the Confederates.

In July, 1870, Miss Anderson was married to George A. Hessen and they continued to make their home in Memphis. Six children were born to this union, two of whom survive, John Hessen, city treasurer, and Mrs. Paul Dowling. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Louis Bamberger of New Orleans, also survives.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. R. W. Hood, will be held from the residence, 1620 Monroe Avenue, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in Elmwood. J. W. Norris is in charge of arrangements.
