DROWNED WHILE BATHING.
THE LIFELESS BODY OF AUGUST ABEL
TAKEN FROM A POND.
He Was a Dairyman and Lived With His
Wife and Four Small Children Near
Leeds - Drowning Occurred
Saturday Evening.
August Abel, a dairyman living at Twenty-ninth street and Hardesty avenue, near Leeds, was found drowned in a pond near his home yesterday forenoon. It is supposed that he was seized with cramps while in the water and was unable to reach the bank.
Saturday night he left his home at about 6:30 o'clock, saying he would take a bath in a small pond located in a pasture back of his house. He failed to return and finally his family concluded to retire, as they thought he had perhaps made a trip into the city.
Yesterday morning he was still absent and a search was instituted, which resulted in finding his clothing on the bank of the pond. Neighbors carefully dragged the pond and finally found the body. It was lying in three feet of water, not more than ten feet from the bank. The body was removed to the house and a courier was sent to this city to notify the coroner.
Deputy Coroner Wheeler viewed the body. He stated that an inquest was unnecessary, as the matter in which the dead man's legs were bent clearly proved that his death in the water was due to cramp. Later the body was brought into the city and taken to Stine & Son's undertaking rooms to be prepared for burial.
Abel was 36 years old and leaves a wife and four small children. He kept a small dairy and had a milk route in this city. The funeral services will be held at his home at 9:30 o'clock to-day. Burial will be in Elmwood [sic] cemetery.
