Oil And Gas Operator Was Once Cub Reporter
William Boothe Robb, 76, well known oil and gas operator, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home in Allegany Grove. He was the father of John M. Robb, well known local attorney and president of the Junior Association of Commerce.
Mr. Robb became ill yesterday morning while visiting in Cumberland but began to feel better after he returned to his home, only to drop dead there about 3:15 p.m. Dr. H. V. Deming, deputy county medical examiner, said death resulted from a heart attack.
Mr. Robb was born in Cumberland April 15, 1871, a son of the late Charles and Josephine Wolfe Robb.
He was a brother of the late Assoclate Judge David A. Robb, a well known Allegany County attorney and once state senator.
Mr. Robb began his career as a cub reporter on a Cumberland newspaper before going to Alaska during the height of the Gold Rush. After spending several years in Alaska, Mr. Robb traveled to California, then to Mexico and later to Texas and Arkansas during the early days of the oil boom. Since that time, Mr. Robb had been engaged in oil and gas "wild-catting" operations. He returned to Cumberland in 1916 and had recently been interested in gas developments in Virginia.
Mr. Robb was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Willie Wilson Robb; two sons, William B. Robb, Jr., and John M Robb, both of Allegany Grove; one daughter, Miss Jean Robb, Milwaukee; two grandchildren, Barbara Anne Robb and John M. Robb, Jr.; one brother, Albert Robb, Oroville, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Frank W. King and Miss Mary H. Robb, both of this city.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a. m. Monday, March 8, at George Funeral Home. Rev. David C. Watson, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, will officiate, and interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
