U.S. Congressman. He was a highly successful lawyer and a prominent politician, serving four consecutive terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 to 1983. Before that, he was a distinguished Democratic member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1967 to 1974. Born to Miroslav Václav Josef Mottl and Anna Hummel, both of Czech descent, he was an outstanding student who graduated from Parma Schaaf High School in 1952 and was later inducted into the school's prestigious athletic hall of fame. In 1955, he played baseball for the University of Notre Dame, where he excelled academically and athletically. He served in the United States Army Reserves in 1957. His time in office was marked by his unwavering commitment to conservative Democratic values, and he was widely respected for his leadership and integrity. After losing his seat in 1982, he returned to local politics in Ohio, where he became a member of the Parma School Board from 1985 until 1986. He was elected president of the school board in 1986 until he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served until 1997. He was a devoted family man, with two children from his first marriage and two from his second.
