William Basten Obituary
William J. Basten of Wildwood A Mass of the Resurrection for William J. Basten, 75, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee. The Rev. Farrell Kane will officiate. Born June 14, 1927, in Waukegan, the son of the late William Basten and Cecelia Leanna, he passed away suddenly Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Atlanta, Ga. Inurnment will be held privately. Bill had retired after 45 years with Midwest Operating Engineers Local #150. He loved to garden, was an avid Bears and White Sox fan, and enjoyed playing cribbage and pool with his many friends. He leaves his loving wife, Janice M. Basten (nee Roff); daughters, Joan (Kerry) Biegay of Waukegan, Gayle Basten of San Francisco, Calif., Jill Basten of Wildwood, Terry Gonder of Druce Lake and Megan Basten of Antioch; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Ray (Janet) and Claude (Ruth) Basten, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Friends of the family may visit from 5 to 9 p.m. today, at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Ltd., 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake. Memorials may be made to White Sox Charities, 333 W. 35th St., Chicago, IL 60616; or to Chicago Bear Care, 1000 Football Drive, Lake Forest, IL 60045.
