BEDFORD — Joseph D. E. Allain, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, of arteriosclerosis and complications due to a stroke suffered April 3, 2007, at Ridgewood Center in Bedford, N.H., where he had been a resident since his stroke.

He was born March 27, 1921, in Sanford, Maine, the sixth son of Elias Allain and Marie (Bourque) Allain. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1940, having been involved in sports as an assistant manager of the baseball team and with other social activities.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in January 1941, served in the European Theater, and was discharged in May 1945 as a S/Sgt. After his discharge, he returned to Sanford and began his lifelong career as a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He was married in December 1945 to Hermance Richard, who passed on April 12, 1985, and together they raised five children. They moved from Sanford to Dover, N.H., in 1955. Joseph was also predeceased by his third child, John, of Fairway, Kan., on Oct. 4, 1995.

He is survived by his daughters, Donna Logan, of Merino, Colo., and Katherine Carmody, of Ledyard, Conn., and sons, Marc Allain, of Somersworth, and Richard Allain, of Merrimack. He was the grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 11.

He enjoyed baseball and football, and had been active in Boy Scouting. During his retirement, he had enjoyed some travel with his brothers and friends, and visited family and friends from coast to coast and several Canadian Provinces.

He will be cremated with burial at an undetermined date. A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph Church at 150 Central Ave., Dover, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. followed by a gathering of family and friends at St. Joseph Parish hall.
