Cuban History Figure. Leonor Antonia de la Concepción Micaela Pérez y Cabrera, the mother of the renowned Cuban independence hero José Martí, played a vital role in Cuban history. Born into a financially comfortable family in the Canary Islands, she displayed beauty, intelligence, and joy from a young age, despite the educational limitations imposed on women during her era. At 15, she relocated to Cuba with her family, who had acquired a spacious residence in Havana through a lottery prize. In Cuba, she married Mariano Martí and Navarro in 1852, and they had eight children, including José Martí. Throughout her life, Leonor accompanied her husband on trips to Spain and Mexico due to both political and family circumstances. After becoming a widow in 1887, she moved to New York with her son José, and in 1899, she accepted a position in the Department of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce, and Public Works, granted by the U.S. occupation government. Her influence on the ethical and moral development of José Martí, along with her contribution to Cuban independence, established her as an important figure in Cuban history. Furthermore, monuments were erected in her honor in various locations in Cuba and Spain, and the Canarian emigrant association in Cuba bears her name as a tribute to her legacy.
