Herbert Leonard Bergsma (Captain, retired Navy) passed away Monday, October 16, 2023 at the Marion VA. Herb was born in Racine, Wisconsin on August 31, 1936 to John and Johnanna (Vlaardingerbroek) Bergsma.

Following his graduation from Calvin College, Herb embarked on a distinguished military career by enlisting in the Navy, amassing a rich collection of commendations, notably including the prestigious Legion of Merit, two Gold Stars adorning his Navy Commendation, and the Meritorious Service Medal, among other honors. Subsequently, he pursued his academic aspirations, earning a Masters in homiletics and liturgics from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, Herb transitioned to a pastoral role, serving as a spiritual leader at both Crystal Congregational Church in Crystal, Michigan, and Grace Evangelical Church in Sheridan, Michigan. In these roles, he displayed remarkable determination, humility, and wisdom, earning the admiration and respect of his congregations.

Herb possessed a special gift for engaging in meaningful conversations with people, effortlessly transforming casual small talk into opportunities to share the Gospel's profound message. Herb leaves behind his loving wife Sally, children Daniel (Brenda) Bergsma, Randall (Sandy) Bergsma, Lisa (Bob) Huisman, Timothy (Qiaobing) Bergsma, John (Dawn) Bergsma, Samantha (Justin) Phenix, Steven (Kate) Bergsma, and Saralena Bergsma; 36 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Tennie, Lucy, Nellie, Coba, Dirke, and John.
