Andrew P. McCormick Sr. Newark detective, N.J. FOP president, active in Carteret, 70

Andrew P. McCormick Sr., 70, of Renaissance of Manchester, formerly of Carteret, died peacefully at home on April 11, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 8:15 a.m. from the Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green St., Woodbridge. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 9 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Port Reading. Entombment will be in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Andy was born on May 31, 1937, in Irvington. He grew up in Newark and raised his family in Carteret before moving to Manchester in 2001. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958. He was a detective with the Newark Police Department, and served as vicepresident and secretary of the Newark PBA. He later served as president of the New Jersey State Fraternal Order of Police before retiring in 1988. During his tenure as a police officer, Andy received numerous citations and awards for his exemplary service, including selection as the Newark Star-Ledgers New Jerseyan of the Week. Andy remained active in the state and local Fraternal Order of Police and was named their Member of the Year for 2007. Upon retirement from the Newark Police Department, Andy served as a sergeant with the UMDNJ Police Department of Scotch Plains, where he received the Deans Citation Award in 2007. Andy was very active in local politics and civic activities while he lived in Carteret, serving as the Democratic Party chairman, chairman of the Citizens Advisory Board, and as a member of the planning board and the zoning board. He was dedicated to the Carteret Sportsmen Association, served as president on two separate occasions, and was named its Man of the Year. Andy also coached in the Carteret Little League for many years. He was an avid Yankees and Giants fan and was proud to pass that passion down through two generations.

Andy is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Barbara (Barlow); his adoring children, Andrew Jr. and his wife, Aileen, of Bellaire, Texas, Barbara McCormick and Daniel Sobreiro of Port Reading, Gary McCormick and his wife, Denise, of Washington Township and Darlene Mansueto and her husband, Peter, of Gardena, Calif. He also leaves behind his five treasured grandchildren, Jenna, Andrew III Drew, Sean, Connor and Kaitlyn McCormick. Andy is also survived by his loving sisters, Grace Murante, Catherine Pikul and Margaret Maltese, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Andrew P.
