Hazel Colvig passed away in Redondo Beach on Monday, July 3rd. Celebrating all the memories are her four children, Mindy [Colvig] Stephens and her husband Rick Stephens (Colorado); Kerry [Colvig] Penberthy and her husband Gary Penberthy (California); Kathleen Colvig (California); and Tim Colvig and his partner Missy Pasanen (Colorado); her grandchildren, Davis Penberthy and his wife Rachelle [Ruggeri] Penberthy (California); Kathleen Penberthy (Idaho); and Sarah [Stephens] Quaintance and her husband Nick Quaintance (Colorado); Dustin Stephens (California); and Dina Davalle (Connecticut); her three great-grandchildren, Jax Penberthy, Reef Penberthy and Maeve Quaintance.Hazel Harriet Spore Colvig was born in Denver, Colorado but California became her home after college at Colorado College, then Stanford University, and meeting her husband Byington Ford Colvig ("By") in San Francisco. Married in 1950, Hazel and By raised their family in Southern California and were married 46 years before he passed away in 1996.While "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was a favorite song, "Haze" loved spending winter holidays in Colorado to see the snow. She loved living in Palos Verdes and San Diego and then her final 16 years were enjoyed in Redondo Beach on the Esplanade, which was ideal for her to hear the ocean and see dolphins playing in the water.Hazel will always be remembered for her big, beautiful smile (and dimples), her Pollyanna attitude, telling a good joke with her wonderful sense of humor (until the very end), always wanting to know "what is going on in the world," and her daily Manhattan cocktail (with specific instructions on how to make them). While born in the Roaring 20s, educated during the Depression and World War II, and raising a family in the Rock 'n' Roll era, Hazel also embraced the digital age to use email, pay her bills and watch her investments online. The only thing that slowed her down was Macular Degeneration, but she worked with every device possible, and with her ever-positive attitude, she extended her ability to see and read as long as possible. The TV then became her friend, and she would "ask Alexa" to play her favorite music, including the (now late) Tony Bennett and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World."She was loved by family, friends and neighbors, young and old. And she was always interested in the lives of all whom she met. She will be deeply missed, but with a long life ending just three weeks shy of her 98th birthday, there are a lot of memories to forever fill our hearts. Quoting her family and friends, she will be remembered as: positive, generous, cleverly funny, smart, classy, a grammarian, stellar, informative, chatty, sensational, effervescent, spirited, witty, engaged, beautiful, curious, a friend, joyous, strong, astute, "glammy" (glamorous Grammy), and so much more. The family also wishes to thank her caregivers, Solitaire Pierre, Joy DeFour, Neyma Arana and managing director, Patrick Fresch, of A Place at Home; as well as Tiffany Williams of Torrance Memorial Hospital Hospice for their incredible care and caring that made her final months a comfort.Cheers to you HHC, you will be dearly missed!
