James was a farmer and a Christian minister. He came to Illinois in 1827, settling in Jersey Prairie, Morgan County, eight miles north of Jacksonville, where he remained until 1855. He, along with his wife Martha and eleven others, organized the first Christian Church in Morgan County, of which he was a deacon and minister. In 1855, he moved to Eureka, Woodford Co., IL where he was an elder of the church and a trustee of Eureka College. In July of 1868, he moved to Pleasant Hill, Cass Co., MO. Soon after this event, the town of Peculiar, MO was formed about two miles from his farm. He preached for five years at the church in Peculiar, returning to Morgan Co., IL in November of 1873 where he enjoyed a life of retirement while still occasionally preaching at the church in Concord, of which he was an elder.
