HELENE BERTHA MATTISEN
March 8, 1916 - January 10, 2009
Lee (Chaffers) "Dolly" Mattisen, Artist, Musician, Scrabble Expert, Educator, died in Winchester of heart failure at age 92.
Lee was born in Lewiston, Maine and was the first daughter of Dr. William and Bertha Chaffers.
She attended school at Presentation of Mary Academy, Quebec and after a bout with TB, graduated from Lewiston High School. She went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree from Massachusetts College of Art and a Master's Degree from Boston University. She was a member of The Winchester Art Association, an artist and musician and educator who taught at The Children's Own School in Winchester and the Winchester and Woburn Public Schools.
In addition, she was a life-long scrabble player who played in national tournaments and was awarded the rank of EXPERT PLAYER, achieving recognition as one of the leading players in the United States and Canada.
She was married to the late Attorney, Andrew H. Mattisen (aka Matiasek) and is the mother of Andrea Mattisen-Haskins and Woodie Haskins of Boston and Chatham, Dr. William Madison of Woburn, and Christine Rogers of Nashua, NH. She also leaves her grandchildren Kristin and Craig Patrick, Elana Feinberg, Ariel and Eric Berson, Vanessa and Alex Rogers, and her great grandchildren, Noah and Daisy Patrick, her sister. Patricia Croteau, Madeleine Chaffers, Pauline Bourassa and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 11am at St. Eulalia's Church,50 Ridge St. Winchester, MA.
