Served in Company I, 104th Ohio Infantry and Company K, 12th Veterans Reserve Corps.

After the war, he married Alice McClure in 1869 in La Salle, Illinois. They were in Keokuk County, Iowa, in 1880, with four children: Troy, Clyde, Edna, and Almira. They next moved to Goodhue County, Minnesota, where Demmon W. Waite appears on the 1890 Veteran's Schedule. Alice died in 1886 and is buried in Goodhue County.

Demmon married Mrs. Meda (Lewis) Clark on Oct. 4, 1897, in Red Wing, Minnesota (SJ Merc., Dec. 22, 1901, p.5 col.1). They relocated to Campbell, Calif., in February 1898 according to an item in the San Jose Mercury (Feb. 20, 1898, p.2): "D. W. Waite and family of Minnesota, who recently purchased some orchard property here, arrived last Wednesday. They have rented a house on Central avenue for the present, but will soon erect buildings on their land."

San Jose Evening News, Oct. 11, 1927. "D. W. WAITE.—Appropriate services for D. W. Waite, 83-year-old native of Michigan, were conducted yesterday afternoon ... following which interment was held in the Los Gatos Cemetery. Many Masons and members of the G.A.R. were in attendance. ... Waite was the husband of Mrs. Meda L. Waite and the father of Troy E., Clyde M., and Mrs. G. G. Stachle. He was a member of the Campbell lodge of Masons and also a member of the G.A.R. of Los Gatos."
