1 Apr 2008: Helen Dora Dashem, 84, of Colyer, was called home by God on Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Hearthside Nursing Center in State College. She was born Aug. 27, 1923, a daughter of the late John Wilbur and Grace Roxanna Bower Dashem. She was the last of her generation, having been preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John William Dashem Sr. and his wife Geraldine and most recently, on March 6, 2008, by a brother Harry; the family dog "Foxy" "Bee Boppers" Helen has been a resident of Colyer all of her life, where she lived on the family farm. As a child she loved school, but had to leave in 8th grade because of transportation issues. Leaving school broke her heart as she wanted to become a secretary. To compensate for her leaving school, her parents purchased a piano, which she learned to play at home. She especially enjoyed playing Christmas music and her favorite hymns. Helen had many good qualities and abilities, not the least of which was giving up her own plans and ambitions to care of her parents. She provided personal almost constant care for her father for two years and for her mother for six years. Quilting, sewing, her ability and pride in raising African Violets and her pride in her canned goods she harvested from the garden she worked in tirelessly, and her famous Angel Food cake with candy sprinkles; were some of her trademarks. Helen would send hundreds of holiday, birthday, thank you and "just because" cards and letters to many people she knew. On the farm she took care of her chickens and her many cats. She loved the summer just to watch her grandmother's roses bloom and as you were leaving, she would make sure you had a bouquet to take with you. Sharing the family history verbally and in pictures was something she enjoyed greatly. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tusseyville for 65 years, and when she could no longer attend church, she faithfully listened to ministers and or church services on the radio every Sunday. Friends will be received from 1:00 - 2:00 p. m. on Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA. The funeral will follow immediately at 2:00 p. m. with the Reverend Doctor Barry Folmar officiating. Burial will be at the Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery, W. Church St. Centre Hall. [Centre Daily]
