JANICE DOROTHY SMUDA, age 67, of Strongsville, OH., on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at Kobacker House in Columbus, OH.

Early Childhood Specialist for the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Founder and Director of the LEAP (Library's Educational Alternative to Preschoolers) Program. Board member for the Virginia Hamilton Society. Member of the American Library Association. Former Elementary School teacher in Minnesota. Earned a Masters of Library Science from Kent State University. Graduated from Concordia College in Seward, NE. Graduated Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, MN.

Preceded in death by parents, Albert and Jeanne Louise Emily Horter; sisters Lucy Knoll and Delores Mason.

Survived by daughters, Pamela (Gary) Slater of Gahanna, OH., Rachael Smuda of FL.; grandchildren Phillip and Claire Slater, Kia Smuda; sisters Paulette Francis of San Jose, CA., Loraine Steiger of Thief River Falls, MN., Elayne (Robert) Ottinger of San Antonio, TX., Bernice Mason of Moline, IL.; brothers Vern Horter, Clifford (Ramona) Horter, all of Grafton, ND.

Memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 7171 Pearl Rd., Middleburg Hts., OH. Pastor Steve Krebill officiating. Family will receive friends ONE HOUR PRIOR TO SERVICE.
