Septimus Mansfield Puckridge was born in Wapping London where he trained with his two brothers under his father to be a Jeweler, Watch, and Clockmaker. By the time of his father's death and the conflict over his will, Septimus decided to immigrate to New Zealand. Paying his own passage and with the sponsorship of Mr. Smyth; Septimus boarded the Ship Clifton on the 2nd of October 1841 and set sail from Gravesend on the 3rd of October 1841. After quite an arduous five-month sailing including pulling in at South Africa for eleven nights, the Clifton arrived in Wellington on February 17th of February 1842.
Septimus set straight to building a house with the help of the native Maori. He involves himself with civic duties and is a member of the Mechanics Institute. He lets out storage space and opens a 'Watchmaker & Clock Repair' business in the front room of his house on Lambton Quay. This proved to not be lucrative in such a young colony and Singapore looked to be a better option within two years he was advertising in the New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Strait Guardian to sell up the house and calling in debt so he could leave the colony before the end of 1844. He and Caroline leave for Singapore via Sydney, Australia onboard The ship Bee on the 4th of January 1845. Meanwhile, Mr. A MACKAY sets up his Watch and Clock business in Septimus's rooms in January 1845.

Septimus and Caroline leave Port Nicholson on the 4th of January 1845 for Sydney via New Plymouth and other ports. The Ship Bee arrived in Sydney on the 10th of January 1845. They lodge for a few nights in Sydney and on the 15th of February 1845 depart Sydney for Singapore onboard the Ship Munford.
On arrival in Singapore, Septimus set up a Watch and Clock-making and repair shop specializing in rating Chronometers within the Gemmills Building on Commercial Square. He also has a soda fountain in his shop and makes Lemonade and Soda for 10 cents a glass, Separate advertisements in the newspaper state he owns a Soda Water and lemonade manufacturer business. By 1847 he reports he was a full Jewler repairing and selling British Plate and all manner of items Scarf Pins, Brooches, Eyeglasses, Spectals, Rings, Sugar tongs, Salt spoons, and all other cutlery. The following year 1848 he became a bookseller, and in 1852 he opened a Marine & General Store down at the Wharf. On 26th July 1853, he advertised as a Ships Chandler & General Store Dealer (buys/sells stores for shipping vessels) Singapore was a busy shipping trading port at the time. We know Caroline became pregnant soon after their marriage in New Zealand as the first son was born nine months later in Singapore and then she had two more living sons in Singapore. It is very possible that Caroline died in childbirth while in Singapore. On a Hospital admission on 19th July 1873 at the Adelaide Hospital for Subacromial Rheumatism Septimus states he had been in Australia for one day and had arrived on the whaling Schooner The Rose, he is widowed and a member of the C of E. He spent twenty-seven days in the hospital and was discharged.
