John Grimes Obituary
John Robert Grimes, former attorney in the Trust Department of the First National Bank of Chicago, died on October 29, 2023, at Evanston Hospital after a short illness. At the time of his death, he was a resident of The Mather retirement community in Evanston, Illinois.
John was born in Chicago in September 1931, the second of two sons of Guy and Leta (Esry) Grimes, and he spent all his life in the Chicago area. He grew up in Lombard, Illinois, and attended the University of Chicago, where he received three degrees: (BA 1952, JD 1955, MBA 1961). After graduation from law school, he served two years in the US Army in Japan supporting war crimes trials. Upon his return to Chicago, he was employed by the First National Bank of Chicago (now J. P. Morgan Chase) as an attorney, and eventually became a senior attorney in the Corporate Trust Department. Upon early retirement he devoted his time to travel, to Chicago cultural events, and to his circle of friends. He was a devoted patron of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was a collector of Japanese prints. He lived in a gracious apartment near Lincoln Park until he moved to The Mather.
John, never married, was predeceased by his only sibling, James E. Grimes, and is survived by his three nephews, Thomas, Donald, and Roger Grimes, and their children and families. He has been cremated, and his ashes will be scattered by family members per his wishes.
