Sunny was born in Hempstead, Texas on August 4, 1924 and grew up in Navasota. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor University. She soon moved to Austin where she met the love of her life – Spot Collins. Spot was well known and loved football player at UT. He served in the marines during WWII and the Korean War. Spot and Sunny enjoyed their three daughters and their many friends. They were long time members of University Christian Church.
Sunny took up tennis at age 50. She and Spot loved playing tennis at Westwood Country Club and both of them were fiercely competitive. Sunny and Spot were married for 49 years till his death in 1996 of Alzheimer's. Sunny was by his side and was his biggest advocate making sure he got the care he needed when she was no longer able to care for him.
After Spots passing, Sunny switched from tennis to bridge. Her competitiveness really came out when she started playing duplicate bridge. She played at the bridge center where she accumulated master points. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends at Westwood one or two times a week as well. Sunny also really enjoyed he "Garden Club" which was a group of women that enjoyed each other and learning about current events, hobbies, good books, crafts, etc…. not gardening. So they changed their name to WOW (Wiser Older Women). They met monthly at Westwood Country Club. Their meetings continued till pandemic stopped all meetings. Sunny was a people person. She really missed her friends. When she moved to assisted living she endeared herself to the caregivers with her humor and quick wit.
