Robert Joseph Coleman
March 19th, 1927 - July 17th, 2017

Robert was known to his friends as "Bob" and to his students as "Roberto". He also liked the name Joseph, also as he was born on St. Joseph's day. His beloved parents were John R. Coleman and Mary Ellen Fenton Coleman. He endured the great economic depression from 1929 to 1939 and that, along with the example of his fine parents forged his compassion for the poor. He attended St. James Grammar school in San Francisco under the Dominican Sisters and the Marianist Brothers. He entered St. Joseph's Seminary (Mountain View) in 1940 and St. Patrick's Seminary (Menlo Park) in 1946. He also, from 1949 to 1951, attended U.S.F. where he obtained his teacher's credential and taught for a year as the Albertinum school in Ukiah, CA. He was ordained to the priesthood June 11th, 1954 for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He served with distinction at the parishes of St. Louis Bertrand and St. Joachim's in the Oakland Diocese and in St. Bernard's in Tracy and also in St. Ann in Lodi (where he built the church in Thornton) and St. Linus, Stockton. There followed several years as chaplain at Duell Vocational Institute, Tracy, during which he was commended by the governor's office for his part in maintaining good order at the prison.

Robert requested laicization in 1972 and his request was granted by Pope Paul VI in 1973.

Robert served as a social worker for perhaps two years as a probation officer doing excellent work, as usual, for 20 years.

In his retirement years he was dedicated to teaching languages. He did so in person and through the computer as a hobby teaching especially Latin, Spanish and French to many students.

He is survived by his siblings: Noel (spouse "Dee"), Rev. John R. Coleman, Sister Mary Noreen, O.P., Noreen (spouse Phil) and by his beloved nephew, Michael and his beautiful nieces Mary, Erin, Sheila and Julie.

Bob will be remembered for his great devotion to his church, his allegiance to Our Holy Father the Pope, his generosity, kindness, and wisdom (and for his athletic feats in his youth). Also he was devoted to Our Blessed Mother Mary.

Finally Bob's family members all want to say "thank you" to Ms. Maria Martinez, a good friend of Bob for many years for all her goodness and kindness to him.

Services: St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1425 Bay Road, East palo Alto, CA
Vigil: Sunday evening, July 30th, 7:00PM
Funeral Mass: Monday, July 31st at 12:00 noon (reception following in Hall)
Burial private.
