Jean Marks, age 87, of Oxford, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, November 18, 2023. Jean was born in Lima, Ohio, on February 24, 1936, to Carl A. Lotz and Eunice Boyer Lotz. Jean graduated from Lima Shawnee High School and then attended Miami University, where she played on the women's basketball team. She graduated in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in education. It was at Miami that she met her husband, Jim, and after their wedding, they stayed in Oxford. Jean taught physical education and coached basketball, volleyball, and field hockey at Talawanda High School in Oxford from 1958-1970. She was a strong advocate for women's athletics during a time when women were not often afforded equal opportunities as men. Jean also taught and coached at Stewart Junior High School and Talawanda Middle School, from 1974-1991. Jean was a member of the inaugural class of the Talawanda H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 (then was a member of the HOF committee) and was inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

In addition to her many accomplishments on the court and field, her greatest achievement was being a loving and loyal grandmother, and recently, a great-grandmother. "Mama Jean" was a passionate and devoted sideline supporter for her grandkids' sports events and concerts. She also sang for years in the Oxford United Methodist Church choir, and enjoyed her weekly lunch gatherings and neighborhood walks with close friends.

Jean is survived by her son, Kevin (Kelly) Marks; grandchildren, Megan (Will) Sayre, Ryan (Gaby) Marks, Andrew (Dana Shunkwiler) Marks, Allie (Chris Eaton) Marks, and Ben Marks; great-grandson, Oliver Sayre; twin sister, Jane Plummer; and numerous other relatives and friends. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Eunice Lotz; her husband of nearly 61 years, Jim Marks; brother, Wayne Lotz; and sister, Marie Leigh, among others.

All are welcome to an informal gathering of family and friends on Friday, November 24, 2023, from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Ave, Hamilton, Ohio 45013. At 2:00 PM, there will be remarks from the family and anyone else who would like to share a story or memory.

Memorial contributions in honor of Jean can be directed towards a pending scholarship with the Greater Oxford Community Foundation (oxfordfdn.org). Additionally, donations can be made to the Talawanda Field Hockey Program, a sport Jean was instrumental in founding at the school (OxfordBrave.com).
