John Henry married Miss Romula Granadion a Mexican. She was 15 and John was 54. Her guardian swore she was 16. This marriage was stormy and John Henry Sr.'s son John Marion Jr. was called on many times to break up the fights. Ashamed of their father's actions, sons John Marion, and William Selman moved uptown away from their father. Their stepmother was younger then them.
###
John Henry Selman Jr.. was serving as a policemen when he met and fell in love (or lust) with a pretty 15 year old daughter of well-to-do and refined gentlemen who had served the Mexican government in its consular branch and who was then living in El Paso, Texas.
The Elopement-On the night of April 1, 1896 the young lady and Selman eloped to Juarez to get married because the girls parents refused their consent and had ordered their daughter not to see Selman. They failed to find anyone in Juarez to marry them and so took rooms at a hotel over there with the intention of getting married the next morning. But "The best laid plans of mice and men aft gang aglee', and the lovers were destined to view the birth of the next day through prison bars.
Found and Jailed-The father of the girl was absent from the city, but her mother becoming anxious over her failure to come home for supper started in search of her missing daughter and located her at 4am. The elopers were taken to jail and the charge of kidnaping preferred against Selman.
The charge is a serious one in Mexico and means the penitentiary if sustained. In court the next morning the young lady testified that she accompanies Selman to Juarez on her own volition. But this did not secure the release of Selman. Because the young lady's family had influence at court.
Sent for her Friend-The young lady despite the protest of her mother declared it her intention to marry Selman as soon as the two were released from custody. It soon became evident however that Selman was not released. Then Selman sent for his friend, Lew Gasser and that confident resourceful you man unfolded to him a bold plot for his rescue. He was broken from jail with a big scuffle and never married the gal.
