JOHN J. SMITH, 88, 4740 S. Bryant Av., died Wednesday. A retired farmer, he was born in Chicago and lived in Minneapolis 18 years.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha; five sons, John, Thaddeus, Berthine and Harry, all of Minneapolis, and Frank, Montebello, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. John Hromada, Crystal, Mrs. Marta Leech and Mrs. Esther Betty, Compton, Calif., and Lucille, Eagle Rock, Calif.; nine grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Rose Cashin, Duluth, Minn.

Born John James Ciesinski in Illinois of Polish parents, Mary and Anton Ciesinski, who were pioneers on a homestead claim in Carlton, Minnesota. Sibling: brother, Max

He appears under John Ciesinski until at least 1940, but then he, his wife and children legally changed to using the family surname Smith.

Married Bertha Josephson on 23 Jun 1903 in Marquette, Michigan. Later census records show she was age 18, and he was 29 at first marriage.

By 1910, they lodged in the household of Peter R Johnson, under the last name of Cienski, at Split Rock township, Carlton County, Minnesota. they had been married 7 years, and Bertha reported bearing 4 children, all still alive.

By 1920, they owned a farm in Silver township, Carlton County, where they stayed until after 1940.
