Sister Mary Concetta Augustine, SSF (nee Clara Augustine) the daughter of Merlin Joseph Augustine, Sr., and Mrs. Nora Mayeaux Augustine, entered eternal life on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. She was born on December 24, 1935, in Marksville, Louisiana. She was 87 years old. Sister M. Concetta entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family on September 8, 1951, made First Vows on August 15, 1954, and Final vows on August 15, 1959. Sister M. Concetta did most of her education and health care ministries in New Orleans: one year in St. Ann's Hatchery; two years at St. John Berchmans; three at St. Joan of Arc School; 20 years at Lafon Nursing Facility (1971-1972,1973-89, 2000-2003); one year at St. John Berchmans Daycare; one year at St. Mary's Academy; one year at St. Raymond School; 2004-2006 at St. John Berchmans Manor, 2006- 2016 at the motherhouse and 2017-2023 as resident at Lafon Nursing Facility. Her ministries away from New Orleans were 1960-64, Christ the King School Belleview, Louisiana; Our Mother of Mercy School, Houston, Texas, Holy Spirit, Marshall, Texas; Holy Ghost School, Opelousas, and Holy Ghost School, Marksville, Louisiana (twice- 1969-71, 1996-2000). In between her early ministries in education and later in health care with the elderly at Lafon, Sister Concetta earned a BS, from Xavier University, further educational studies at Dillard University and was a certified coder. Sister did Medical Billing for some time at Lafon Nursing Facility. Sister was a founding board member of the M&N Foundation. She also participated in the Elders Program at the Institute of Black Catholic Studies of Xavier University. Finally, Sister Concetta was a proud member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, St. Francis de Sales Court 325. Sister was preceded in death by her parents, Merlin Joseph Augustine, Sr., and Mrs. Nora Mayeaux Augustine and two sisters: Mrs. Catherine Alexander and Mrs. Dorothy Rogers. She is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Josephine Fontenot and Mrs. Audrey Keller, one brother, Dr. Merlin Joseph Augustine, Jr., Ph.D., and a host of nieces and nephews as well as beloved students, friends, and religious sisters. Sister Concetta will be remembered for her gentle and peaceful demeanor, inimitable compassion, and determination. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Chapel of the Sisters of the Holy Family, 6901 Chef Menteur Hwy., NOLA 70126. Visitation begins at 8:00 a.m. Wake services begin at 9:15 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment at St. Louis Cemetery # 2.
