Mrs. James B. Pees

Eliza Arilla Gunn was born September 5, 1840 in Lawrence Co., Missouri and died at Iola, Kansas December 8, 1928, aged 88 years, 3 months, 3 days. She was the last of a family of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Carver Gunn.

In 1856 she was united in marriage to Jasper Hillbrant at Bolivar, Missouri. The young couple came immediately to Kansas and knew the hardships incident to early pioneer life. Indians were plentiful, crops were not always good and the real trials of Pioneer life confronted these young folks constantly. Two children were born to this union, William G. Hillbrant of Iola, and Charles deceased.

In 1862 the husband and father died and left the young widow with two children in a frontier community in rather difficult circumstances. Shortly after the death of her husband Mrs. Hillbrant returned to Missouri, and later married Lewis Dennison, she returned to Kansas in 1867. To this union were born 2 children, Thomas Dennison of Iola, and Mrs. Lillian Russ, Pittsburg, Kansas.

On October 3, 1876 Mrs. Dennison was again married this time to Mr. James B. Pees to this union were born three children, Guy Pees of Iola, Elmer, deceased, and Mrs. Lacy Morell of Iola.

The supreme interest of Mrs. Pees was her home and her family because of her devotion to her home duties she was not connected with any outside organizations. Her life was given through hardship as well as through more favorable circumstances to those who had been committed to her care, with her she attended the Christian church quite regularly , and the influence of her devotion manifest today in the lives of her children.

Mrs. Pees was confined to her home for sometime, but was not until the last few weeks she became severely ill. She went asleep some two weeks ago. She slept away to the world hat beyond the limitations of hardships and difficulties of this life.

Funeral services were held at Sleeper Chapel Sunday afternoon December 9, conducted by the Rev. Coldsmith, Music was furnished by Misses Lucile Canatsey and Margaret Hanson, Messrs, Myron Funk, and Donald Gish, with Mrs E. W. Haglund at the piano. Burial was at Piqua Cemetery.

(The names John Reed- Betty Reed, Archer Reed were printed in pencil at top of obituary. A Betty Reed was Eliza Gunn sister, who married a John Reed.)
